{"id":6752,"date":"2011-10-01T18:09:34","date_gmt":"2011-10-02T01:09:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stormwater.sustainablewestseattle.org\/?p=6752"},"modified":"2011-10-01T18:09:34","modified_gmt":"2011-10-02T01:09:34","slug":"department-of-ecology-needs-to-hear-from-you","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tox-ick.org\/index.php\/2011\/10\/01\/department-of-ecology-needs-to-hear-from-you\/","title":{"rendered":"Department of Ecology needs to hear from YOU!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\tWhen we think of pollution we often think of some monolithic corporation driven mad by its pursuit of profit \u2013 belching smoke and slime into our air and water \u2013 robbing the community of a healthful environment.<\/p>\n<p>When we hear that Puget Sound is sick with pollution, how many of us think of our homes, our lawns and our roads?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Today, our communities are the number one source of toxins entering Puget Sound.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Heavy metals from our tires and brakes; fertilizers and pesticides from our lawns; soap from the charity car wash\u2026 these are the things silently flowing down our storm drains and into Puget Sound.\u00a0 This toxic mix is strangling Puget Sound.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You can help staunch this flow of toxins.\u00a0 You can help save Puget Sound.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ecy.wa.gov\/programs\/wq\/stormwater\/municipal\/2012Reissuance.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Washington State Department of Ecology is now accepting public comments <\/a>on its standards for \u201cLow Impact Development\u201d and its stormwater pollution permits.\u00a0 If we help convince the state to adopt stronger standards, then we can abate the massive transfer of toxins from our communities into Puget Sound.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.epa.gov\/owow\/NPS\/lid\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Low Impact Development<\/a> (aka LID or Green Stormwater Infrastructure) is a method of development that enhances the ability of the earth to absorb polluted runoff from our streets, sidewalks and lawns. \u00a0It involves using things like rain gardens, vegetated rooftops, permeable pavement and trees to absorb the flow of rainwater.<\/p>\n<p>Communities that act like sponges for rainwater slow the flow of toxins.\u00a0 Once in the earth, soil bacteria and fungi can help degrade many of the toxins that are now flowing directly into our water and into our food chain.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Please ask the Department of Ecology to adopt strong standards to protect our region\u2019s greatest resource \u2013 Puget Sound.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You can <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/ow.ly\/617jc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sign an online petition<\/a><\/strong> developed by <a href=\"http:\/\/pugetsound.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">People for Puget Sound.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>You can also participate in the Department of Ecology&#8217;s public comment period.\u00a0 Learn more at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ecy.wa.gov\/programs\/wq\/stormwater\/municipal\/2012Reissuance.html\">http:\/\/www.ecy.wa.gov\/programs\/wq\/stormwater\/municipal\/2012Reissuance.html<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Cate White\t\t<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When we think of pollution we often think of some monolithic corporation driven mad by its pursuit of profit \u2013 belching smoke and slime into our air and water \u2013 robbing the community of a healthful environment.
